This desk created from a vintage door was designed by Manoteca

This thing is gorgeous. Not functional for my uses, but still beautiful.

This would make me die of fear.

This would make me die of fear.

Minneapolis is beautiful in the winter. Cold and miserable, yes, but beautiful.

In the first place, things shouldn’t be designed specifically to be used for 10 minutes then discarded. Having so many disposable things at our convenience really changes the way that we think over time—we start to get entitled to our right to throw things away and that entitlement seeps into other parts of our personal lives, the way we interact with other humans, or responsibility to the future health of our communities.
I think this doodled styrofoam cup is great. It gave me a project idea. Take something designed specifically to be thrown away and make it so pretty no one would want to throw it away. Force people to keep around manufactured waste until we realize we should actually start by making things that we want to keep around for the long haul. Reduce waste and change perspectives until we all feel entitled to a sense of wonder rather than indifferent disregard.

The Earth is Flat by Porter Yates on Flickr.I love the title that Porter gave this photo. It looks like that’s where the earth just drops off into the sky. I started writing a story a few months ago about a present day world where we don’t yet know the world is round nor that the ocean doesn’t go on for infinity. This photo makes me want to revisit that story. Not knowing and discovery are the most exciting experiences in life. This photo was take in Ecuador. I’m planning to do some South American travel next year. We’ll see if I can find my end of the Earth.

I’m spending a lot of time thinking about what I should be doing with my life. Like, what kind of job should I have? Should i focus on work first and then on creative pursuits? You know, get the whole money thing nailed down first.

I usually answer that with a Yes. Mostly because I’ve had miserable jobs before and they’ve made it almost impossible to survive. So if I can avoid that I’ll be better off. Mentally anyway.

But then I also think that that’s the dumbest way to go about it all. Why would I focus so much time and effort on something I don’t care about so I can later spend time on things I do care about? That has been the American male’s downfall for decades. That’s why kids hate their dads, why none of us ever get around to being happy because happiness comes only after something else.

I tried to learn calligraphy for a while so I could do things like this. I never got that far.
